É pau / É pedra - Sergio / Camargo
Body
In 1973, when commissioned to create a chess set, Sergio Camargo experimented for the first time with black stone in his work. Over time, he came to favour Noir-belge marble, a deep, highly resistant stone, for the creation of his dark sculptures.
Camargo explored light in his pieces: while white radiates luminosity, black absorbs it. For this reason, his black works were polished, allowing them to reflect the ambient light. From the 1980s onwards, Noir-belge marble appears in elongated forms with increasingly sharp angles, which he called “whales” and which he produced until the end of his life.
