The first white relief appeared in 1963, when Sergio Camargo was 33 years old. Although he had been experimenting with sculpture since the age of eighteen, it was an everyday occurrence that led him to a more systematic investigation. While cutting an apple, he sliced almost half the fruit and then removed a piece with a cut at a different angle. The relationship of light and shadow created between the two planes surprised him and sparked his research.

He then began producing the reliefs: small wooden cylinders painted white and arranged on a flat surface at different inclinations. The infinite compositional possibilities create visual rhythms, optical vibrations that many critics associated with kinetic art. Always entirely white, they give prominence to light rather than colour.
